- Gansbaai is one of the only places in the world that great white sharks are seen throughout the year
- It is a breath-taking sight to behold these ancient giants and their innate grace, obvious intelligence and curiosity and raw power
Tinggly recommend this amazing excursion, operating off the South African coast from the fishing town of Gansbaai, around 2 hours from Cape Town. Led by a shark conservation expert, you’ll learn heaps about these incredible predators, the challenges they face, and how they live and feed. This is an adrenaline-packed, humbling and only mildly terrifying experience, and one which we think everyone ought to try at least once!
After a full safety briefing you’ll head out on the good ship Barracuda with a case of packed lunches in search of shark, something this team have a lot of success with. Once you find some, you’ll have the option of either watching from the boat, or being lowered into the water inside a sturdy cage from where you can observe the sharks up-close - this is the tough part! The sharks can reach speeds of up to 35mph (56kmph) and regularly grow more than 6m(21ft) in length - so expect to be awestruck from the get-go. You’ll be perfectly safe inside the cage, but if you get a little nervous don’t worry, it’s perfectly natural!
Anya and I visited South Africa in late September, so it was very much still spring in the country. This meant that the water was quite chilly and the air didn’t do an overly good job warming us up either. Even so, it was a really fun half-day tour. I would love to dive with the sharks again in the future and hopefully have better visibility from the water!
