- One of Azerbaijan’s only two UNESCO World Heritage Sites
- See Gobustan’s famous mud volcanos
This thrilling cultural tour from Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, takes you to Gobustan, which is currently one of only two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the country. Gobustan National Park is a site of immense historic significance, dotted with many rock engravings that date back up to 5000 years. Depicting battles, animals and imagery of rituals, the carvings are wonderfully well-preserved and make for a truly fascinating tour. You’ll also see manmade caves that bear traces of human settlement as far back as the last Ice Age.
Your Azerbaijan gift experience includes entrance to the Gobustan Museum of Petroglyphs, where you can learn more about this incredible archive, and also a visit to Gobustan’s famous mud volcanos, a popular sight for geologists and travellers alike. The mud is said to have medicinal properties, so you can rub some on your skin to see the effect. Every now and then one erupts, a spectacular image. Returning to Baku, one final treat, as your guide will show you around the historic Bibi-Heybat Mosque, a stunning recreation of the one destroyed in the early 19th century by the Bolsheviks. You can see the tomb of Ukeyma Khanum here, said to be a descendant of the Prophet Muhammed.
