- See Colombia’s tallest waterfall and bathe at the foot of another
- Explore the astonishing natural beauty of the Andean East Hills
Escape the hustle of Bogota for a day with this adventure into the East Hills wilderness, framed by Andean peaks and interspersed with refreshing waterfalls. From the city it’s a journey of just 45 minutes out to the forested countryside, pausing at the colonial village of Choachi with its pretty church. The hike to the first waterfall, El Chiflon, takes around three hours and requires reasonable levels of fitness because you’ll be trekking at high elevations. But the reward is more than worth the effort, as you get to scamper behind the cascading waterfall then take a cooling swim in the turquoise pool at its base afterwards.
After a snack break, it’s back into the verdant forest for a shorter hike to La Chorra, which at 590m is the tallest in Colombia. The raging torrent can be heard from some distance away, as you pass through a landscape of orchids, juniper, cedar and mahogany trees. After taking in the impressive sight for a while you’ll return to your vehicle and head to La Candelaria, for a tasty traditional lunch of typical Colombian fare. This Bogota gift experience is a great day out for hiking enthusiasts, and you can expect the scenery to be nothing short of magnificent.
