Tinggly, as you may know, is in the business of gifting experiences over material possessions. That’s why, ‘Give stories, not stuff’ has been our mantra since the very beginning.

To some, it might just sound like another clever marketing slogan, but it’s not. We honestly believe that all of the ‘stuff’ which humans accumulate and consume is killing the planet we live on.

Plastics in our oceans is one of the main offenders, that’s why we decided that Tinggly must be a part of the solution. But how?

According to NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) 8 million metric tonnes of plastic enter our oceans every year – that’s the equivalent of 90 aircraft carriers. It doesn’t all get there in one go, it happens slowly with every straw we use, with every discarded toy, and with every plastic bottle that gets dumped.

We knew that the best way of helping was by trying to stop these plastics from reaching the oceans in the first place. That’s why we designed and built our first river-based Trash Trap and tested it the waters of our homeland, Lithuania.

Here’s how it went:

Then, it was time to take the idea to the next level, and the next location – the island of Bali in Indonesia.

At this point, we were stepping into the unknown. Hoping that things would run smoothly, that our efforts would be aided by locals, and that new partners would step onboard and face up to the challenge beside us.

Our ultimate vision is that every river in Bali – and elsewhere – will house a Trash Trap, preventing plastics from entering the seas where the devastating damage is being done. This is just the beginning of the journey, but a journey that we believe is a worthwhile undertaking.
