Surfing Without Waves – Join the Jet Surf Revolution

Get the lowdown on one of the most exciting new watersports experiences in the Tinggly portfolio…

Cancun is Mexico’s most popular resort destination, but one group that rarely visits these sun-splashed shores is the surfing community. That could all be about to change however. Because while the big waves needed to keep surfers’ interest are something of a rarity off Cancun, a new and unique form of watersport, called JetSurfing, is beginning to explode.

What is JetSurfing?

Jet Surfing is easy to pick up, and be warned, it’s highly-addictive.

Essentially, you’re standing on a lightweight motorized surfboard, capable of reaching speeds of up to 35 mph (56 kph). The boards, made from carbon fibre and kevlar, were designed by F1 and MotoGp engineers to be used in any water conditions, so you could be racing through huge swells, or practising your turns on a flat lake, and the board will work equally well. You activate it using an automatic start control unit held in your hand – just stand up, get your feet into the right position, and push the button.

Weighing in at under 28lbs (12kgs), JetSurf boards can be transported around the world in search of the perfect wave. It’s the only motorized form of water transport that you can easily take in a car or on a plane – handy.

The man behind JetSurfing is one Martin Sula, a Czech national living in Mexico and who, it’s fair to say, has taken surfing to an entirely new level. The sport originates from Polynesian traditions, first observed by Europeans in the 18th century. Over the years it spread to California and Australia, then around the world. And now, it’s motorized!

Why try JetSurfing

Such is Sula’s belief in the new sport’s potential, he thinks that 99% of beginners can pick up the basics in just one lesson. Obviously it helps if you already know how to balance on a surfboard, but no experience is really necessary.

JetSurfing requires greater physical effort than regular surfing, because you’re on your feet the whole time, whereas with a normal swell you’d probably be on the board for only around 10-15 seconds.

And while they’re unlikely to make the switch permanently, some pro-surfers have found that JetSurfing is a good way to keep in shape and practise when there’s no wind, or they can’t afford to chase waves around the world.

We did! Our CEO Linas has traveled to Mexico and found this experience himself. Although challenging at first, the experience was unforgettable and quoting Linas words – “there‘s no way this experience does not go into the Tinggly gift collections!“.
