This was a fun excursion! We really enjoyed seeing more of the Netherlands outside of the city and got to do a lot in one afternoon/evening. The tour company seemed a little scattered at times but the overall experience was still good, especially if you are willing to be flexible.
No visit to the Netherlands is complete without seeing the beautiful countryside. This lovely tour departing from Amsterdam takes you firstly to the justifiably famous windmills of Zaanse Schans, including a visit to a working historic windmill. This is considered a major highlight of many Dutch holidays. Next you’ll head for the lively fishing village of Volendam, where you’ll have lunch at a good seafood restaurant, hopefully picking the catch of the day, and a tour of a cheese factory / museum for insight into one of the area’s major industries.
After lunch, if you’re visiting in summer, then you’ll climb aboard a boat for a picturesque cruise to Marken, a traditional island community and encounter a clog-maker, as well as a shop that produces Dutch cheese with techniques followed through the centuries. An excellent chance to purchase what may well be some of the finest cheese you will ever taste! Note that if you’re taking the tour in winter then the Volendam - Marken route is by bus.
