We were picked up by our tour guide, Saeed. He was very knowledgeable and passionate about the things he was talking about. The company was also very flexible and able to accommodate a last minute change of date due to illness. We also had an opportunity to visit an interesting marble work show room and a less interesting carpet showroom, but these are part and parcel of most tours, especially as we were not pressured into buying anything at all. All in all I would thoroughly recommend this tour.
You’ll journey in comfort from Delhi to Agra by air-conditioned vehicle, which brings you to the station. Please enjoy the 90-minute train journey and on arrival you’ll be met by your guide, who will accompany you into the Taj Mahal. Built between 1632 and 1653 by Shah Jahan as a legacy to his beloved wife who died in childbirth, it is considered to be one of the greatest examples of Muslim art and architecture, the work of thousands of skilled craftsmen. Of particular note are the verses from the Koran that have been used as decoration, and the stunning Mughal Gardens.
The guided tour continues with the Agra Fort, another UNESCO-listed site, of huge political and cultural significance. Nearby, the Baby Raj is another outstanding example of Persian architecture, the tomb of Mirzā Ghiyās Beg, known as I'timād-ud-Daulah (pillar of the state). Notice the semi-precious stones that stud its walls - it is often referred to as the Jewel Box. The tour finishes at the tomb of Mughal Emperor Akbar, in Sikandra. Another masterpiece dating to the 17th century, the walls are a striking red sandstone, with features carved in white marble.
