Departing from Glasgow, the first stop on this absorbing excursion is the Wallace Monument in Stirling, where you’ll discover the truth behind the man they called ‘Braveheart’, and see his mighty 5.6ft (1.7m) broadsword. Onwards to Gleneagles, site of the 2014 Ryder Cup, which enjoys an unparalleled legacy among golfing internationals. At the Glenturret Distillery, secluded in a valley just outside Crieff, you’ll be able to joining the Famous Grouse Experience, learning the secrets of the ‘water of life’, and sample a little of the Black Grouse Alpha Edition, perfect on a chilly day. A cafe on-site is an excellent option for lunch.
Heading due west, past the glimmering Loch Earn on the way to Kilmahog woollen mill, you’ll meet hairy Hamish, the most famous Highland cow of them all. Then, leaving the best ‘til last, you’ll drive through the Trossachs national park and be glued to the windows as some of Scotland’s most breathtaking landscape surrounds you. This is Rob Roy-country. The tour takes a brief refreshment stop at pretty Aberfoyle, before returning you to Glasgow.
