- Your chance to bathe in a natural volcanic spa
- Minerals said to have skin rejuvenating qualities
Cartagena is often a must-see on any Colombia holiday, a beautiful historic city that demands a sightseeing tour. But after you’ve spent a day or two exploring, what better way to relax than by spending some time in the countryside outside the city, and then finishing with a natural mud bath? This is one of our favourite gift experiences in Colombia, combining spectacular views across mountains, lakes and forests with an adventurous trip inside the small Totumo volcano and then a blissful warm soak in the volcanic mud.
The Totumo volcano is a landmark in the beautiful Santa Catalina region. It is said that many years ago a priest sprinkled holy water onto a volcano that was spewing lava, taming it to become a mud spa instead. The mud is said to have skin healing properties, and for a supplement you can also have a massage from one of the attendants - it’s the perfect way to unwind after your Cartagena sightseeing. You climb up a set of steps to the top of the 50ft volcano and gently sink into the crater, washing the mud off later in a nearby lake. A restaurant on-site is available if you’d like to eat afterwards, before your return trip to Cartagena.
