- Most important city in Mayan-Guatemala
- An immense UNESCO World Heritage Site
- Visit a location from Star Wars
The vast Mayan city of Tikal, with monumental architecture dating back as far as the 4th century BC, was ‘rediscovered’ only in the mid-19th century. Exploring the site with a guide, you’ll see ancient temples, monuments, plazas and tombs, learning as you go the history of Tikal, and about the ceremonies and ways of life of the inhabitants. A traditional Guatemalan lunch is also provided before return to Flores - you’ll certainly build up an appetite as you wander around this enormous archaeological park.
Tikal is hidden within a tropical rainforest, which you’ll negotiate with your guide, admiring the local flora and fauna on the way. On entering Tikal itself, expect a breathtaking spectacle - some of the architecture here, particularly the temples, are stunning. Finally, one for Star Wars-buffs: when George Lucas was location-scouting for A New Hope, he chose Tikal as a site for Yavin 4, a rebel base.
