- Explore the old royal capital
This is the essential Montenegro sightseeing day-trip. In just 12 hours you’ll cover many of the country’s most beautiful natural locations, and sites of historic and cultural interest, with plenty of time for exploring and photography, even a short swim! Departing Kotor in the morning, you’ll join the Old Road to Cetinje, the old royal capital. Built in 1879, the road has 25 curves and is a really thrilling drive, with stunning views of Boka Bay. You can purchase breakfast including traditional hams and cheeses in the village of Njegusi, birthplace of the Petrovic dynasty which ruled Montenegro for almost three centuries. That should give you the energy you need to tackle the 461 steps leading up to the magnificent chapel and mausoleum here, constructed of marble and over 200,000 gilded tiles.
After a short walking tour of Cetinje during which you’ll see holy relics, monuments and significant architecture including the royal theatre and historic foreign embassies, the tour moves on to River Crnojevica. Close to beautiful Lake Skadar, the town sits on an ancient trading route, and is a great place to try the local fish for lunch. You can purchase a short boat trip on the river, or wander around for an hour or so on foot. The medieval Old Town of Budva is the final stop, one of Montenegro’s most popular tourism destinations. You’ll have another fascinating walking tour, before a little time to relax and swim on the city beach, and then return to Kotor. Don’t miss this Montenegro gift experience if you want to make the most of your time and see as much as possible in one go!
