- Hike on one of Europe’s largest glaciers
- Walk through a spectacular ice cave
This visit to Vatnajökull, the second-largest glacier in Europe, will be memorable for two reasons: firstly, you’ll be trekking, with the aid of crampons and a professional guide, across some of the most starkly beautiful terrain imaginable, with panoramic vistas of mountains and sweeping fields of ice. Secondly, you’ll do what few other visitors are able to, which is step inside an actual ice cave, to witness shards of blue light shining through the light - a stunning natural spectacle.
Ice caves are formed during the wintertime, when glacial rivers retract and water freeze, leaving huge cavities that are found in different locations every year. As you can expect, access is dependent on safety and temperature, so the choice of which cave to enter will depend on the guide, but you can expect to be blown away by the beauty inside. Trek back along the glacier, pausing regularly along the way to take in this epic landscape. One of the must-do Iceland experiences.
