A must-do when visiting the popular town of Vang Vieng is to float slowly along the pleasant Nam Song river. Many choose to do it in old tractor inner-tubes, but this special tour gives you much greater control of your pace and direction. The remote location is a haven for backpackers seeking calm in the shacks that line the riverbanks, and the mountains that tower above you provide a dramatic backdrop. You will be picked up from your accommodation and driven by truck to a starting-point 12 miles (20km) upstream, where your friendly guide will show you the ropes before heading off. Rest stops are frequent, along with discussion of traditional Laotian culture and the area you’re passing through.
Towards the end of the trip you’ll stop at the famous Tham Xang cave, known for the rock outside shaped like an elephant’s head. In this cool limestone cave you’ll see ancient Buddhist statues, and have the opportunity to swim or tube around for a while. An enjoyable lunch will be waiting for you at the end of the tour, following which you can have a refreshing beer or two at any of Vang Vieng’s buzzing bars.
