The Berchtesgaden area was a favourite of the Bavarian royal family, who would often hunt here, as well as artists who found inspiration in the surrounding Alpine scenery. Heading out from the city on this entertaining Salzburg gift experience, you’ll pass the Königseeache River and the Obersalzberg, site of Adolf Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest mountain retreat. Your destination is the world-famous Berchtesgaden Salt Mine, which for five centuries gave the area its vast wealth, and is now one of Salzburg’s best-known visitor attractions.
Entering the mine, you’ll be equipped with protective clothing, before using the slides that the brave men who once worked here needed to get around inside. While learning the history and legends associated with this fascinating underground world, you’ll take a rafting trip on a vast salt lake, a truly memorable experience, and also a ride on an actual mining train! Before returning to Salzburg, there will be time for a short wander around Berchtesgaden where you may be able to sample some of the local delicacies.
