This day-trip to the Berlengas from Lisbon takes you to an absolutely idyllic destination, a UNESCO Biosphere nature reserve which you can choose to explore either by kayak, boat swimming or on foot, or simply relax on a sunsplashed beach. You’ll board the boat in Peniche, a charming traditional fishing village, after a comfortable transfer from nearby Lisbon. On arrival at the airport, you’ll board a smaller boat to see the offshore St. John the Baptist Fort, once a vital part of Portugal’s sea defences and now a very interesting ruin to explore, and learn about the brave soldiers that defended it during an attack by the Spanish fleet in 1666.
After returning to the main island of the archipelago, you can then pause for lunch in the restaurant if you wish (not included), or take a swim or snorkel off the nearby beach. This experience includes the option either of taking a kayaking trip around the cliffs and caves of the island, or seeing them the more relaxed route - by glass-bottomed boat. Another popular activity here is to just walk around the paths of the reserves to admire the stunning views and birdlife. The Berlengas archipelago is a dreamy escape from the city. It does get busy, especially on summer weekends, but with the range of activities included this makes for a fantastic day-trip from Lisbon.
