Journey to the ‘Roof of the world’ with this spectacular 8-day walking tour in Tibet, led by experienced local guides and giving you a unique, authentic insight into Tibetan culture, as well as views that you will never forget. Your tour begins with a pick-up from either Gonggar Airport or Lhasa train station, overnighting in the capital as you acclimatise. You’ll enjoy easygoing tours of Lhasa, visiting some of Tibet’s most sacred temples, bustling monasteries and the famous Potala Palace, once home to the Dalai Lama. On day 4, you’ll be ready to begin your trek into the mountains towards Shigatse, past glaciers, clear blue lakes, rural villages and stupas. The next day, you’ll enjoy magnificent views of the mighty Himalayas, some of the tallest mountains in the world right in your eyeline. Tonight, you’ll be staying in a tented camp near Everest Base Camp, 5200m above sea level and adjacent to the highest monastery in the world in Rongbuk Valley. If you want to trek up to the actual camp, you can do so, or just take the minibus.
Following your stay in Rongbuk Valley, day six sees you returning to Shigatse by minibus for a well-deserved hot shower and a rest. You’ll be trekking back to Lhasa via a different route, visiting an incense factor and the 15th century Tashi Lhunpo monastery along the way, which holds the tombs of several Panchen Lamas. On your return to the capital, you can be transferred to the airport or train station if you wish. Whether flying out or taking the train, you can expect even more sumptuous views. This is an adventurous Tibet gift experience, one that requires a degree of physical fitness as you will be walking at very high altitudes across some difficult terrain. But if you’re up to the challenge, this is an unforgettable tour of a magical country.
