The attractive thermal city of Pamukkale is one of the world’s oldest, the hot springs popularised from the 2nd century and frequently visited by citizens of Ancient Rome. Here you’ll find the White Travertines, a natural phenomenon of cascading volcanic calcium. En route, the tour stops at Korkuteli, a district known not only for having successfully resisted a siege by Alexander the Great, but also for its delicious “burnt” ice-cream, made from goats milk. This tour is available from Side, Alanya or Antalya.
Around Pamukkale there is much to explore, including the ruins of the Necropolis and a 15,000 capacity Roman theatre, as well as Cleopatra’s Pool and the hot spring coloured red by the minerals in the water. After your return journey visit a Turkish rug and carpet producer, where you can see traditional hand-weaving in action and perhaps pick up a souvenir.
