- Ranked by Top Gear as the best road in the world
- See the fortress built by legendary Vlad the Impaler
- Discover a masterpiece of engineering in Vidraru Dam

Once described by Top Gear’s Jeremy Clarkson during filming as “the best road in the world” for drivers, the Transfagarasan mountain road is 56 miles of steep climbs, hairpin turns and some of the most breathtaking scenery you will ever see. There’s plenty of excellent sightseeing to enjoy on this Romania gift experience too. Beginning in Curtea de Arges, you’ll pass the impressive Orthodox Monastery here that dates from the 14th century, and holds the tombs of several Romanian royals.
Further along you’ll see the mighty Poenari Fortress. Built by the legendary Vlad the Impaler himself, said to have been the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula,’ the fortress is high up in the mountains. If you feel up to the challenge then you can tackle the 1480 steps to the fortress for some truly spectacular panoramic views. The adventure continues - next up is the Vidraru Dam, reckoned by some to be one of the great feats of engineering, and where you’ll often find extreme sports enthusiasts going about their business. You’ll also see the beautiful Balea Lake, before this epic and truly memorable road trip is over.
