- Laidback, leisurely sightseeing at its best
- Sail on an iconic schooner
- Chance to see whales and porpoises
A fantastic seafaring adventure! My wife and I were booked on the 10 a.m. sail. Once the schooner Surprise made it out of the harbor, the crew (our skipper Laird and his mate, the college-age granddaughter of one of the previous owners) raised the sails, cut the engine and we were underway. A brisk breeze pushed our speed up to almost 6 knots, thrilling all on board. Laird, barefoot and bearded, treated us and our fellow passengers to a fascinating, and humorous, history of the 100-year-old vessel, lobstering and other nautical tales, never missing a beat even when his cell phone fell into the bay. After an hour heading away from Camden, we came about for the one-hour return trip. Even though the wind died down, it was still glorious. Highly recommended!
Such a beautiful day on the water. The captain and crew were so friendly and fun!
The iconic Maine coast is as beautiful a place for a sailing trip as you can imagine. With the wind ruffling your hair, board the Surprise, a traditional fishing schooner first launched in 1918. This gorgeous vessel has a proud maritime heritage, restored several times over nearly a century, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, so a voyage on the Surprise through Penobscot Bay is one of sheer elegance. May Tinggly suggest bringing along a bottle of chilled wine and maybe even some lobster rolls to enjoy as the scenery drifts by?
A typical tour may take in the Penobscot Bay, and the Camden Hills, “where the mountains reach the sky”, see luxurious summer estates along Rockport coast, or head toward Islesboro Island. It’s common to spot seals and porpoises basking in the dappled sunlight, and even bald eagles and whales, so if you have binoculars or a camera, be sure to bring them along. Your crew will also be happy to illuminate the history of lobster fishing in the region, and ensure you are comfortable at all times. This gift experience in Maine is truly sublime.
