What began years ago as a hidden gem in the underground caves of Waitomo has now become one of New Zealand’s most popular experiences, a spectacular guided expedition into a subterranean wonderland. You’ll be issued with a wetsuit and suitable footwear, then led deep into Ruakuri Cave via a unique spiral entrance, for a tour like no other, past underground waterfalls and bizarre limestone formations.
A reasonable level of fitness is essential, as you’ll be leaping and climbing through the cave system, while at times floating gently along on an inner tube. The real highlight, though, is when you switch off your headtorches and the cave is illuminated instead by the thousands of glowworms on the ceiling. This experience is a classic NZ adventure, one to tell your friends about.
