- See Baku at its most dazzling - by night
- Discover Yanar Dag, the incredible ‘Burning Mountain’
The best time to explore the Azerbaijani capital is by night. In the evenings, most of Baku’s historic buildings and landmarks are illuminated, making for spectacular sightseeing. This memorable guided tour take you around the city in a comfortable car or minivan, and is a great way to get your bearings if you’re a new arrival. You’ll pause at must-visit sights including Highland Park, Flame Towers and the Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center, with a professional, knowledgeable local to explain their significance.
For our money though, the best part of this Azerbaijan gift experience is the final stop on the tour - Yanardag - otherwise known as ‘the Burning Mountain’. It’s a continuously lit gas fire on the hillside above the city, overlooking the Caspian Sea. Most of the world’s fire mountains are concentrated in Azerbaijan, due to the amount of natural gas beneath the ground that sometimes seeps out. It’s said that a shepherd accidentally lit the flame here in the 1950s, and it’s never gone out since.
