- Climb to the summit of Guatemala’s most active volcano
- Soothe your muscles in a natural hot spring
Our visit to the Pacaya Volcano was such an enjoyable hike, and a great way for us to exercise on our trip. The views were superb and the volcano itself was a sight to see. We liked that this was very accessible from the city. We also loved the fact that we were able to cap it off with a short visit to the hot springs. This definitely soothed our muscles after the long hike. During our visit, we didn’t see any hot lava but it was still a great visit.
We think this is one of the most essential gift experiences in Guatemala, combining adventure with sublime relaxation. You’ll be picked up from your hotel either in Guatemala City or Antigua, and transported to the amazing Pacaya National Park. A rocky, forested landscape is dominated by the Pacaya Volcano, which has erupted at least 23 times since the 16th century invasion of Guatemala by the Spanish. Today it remains an extremely lively volcano, so this trek is sure to get your heart racing!
The ascent to the summit takes around an hour, at which point you can actually take a peek inside the crater to see the lava and see for yourself the immense power of an active volcano. On descending from Pacaya, you’ll head to the nearby Kawilal hot springs, heated by thermal energy and one of the country’s best-known. Lunch will be served here after which you can slip into a few of the 12 soaking pools, then pamper yourself in one of over 20 steam baths and three hydrotherapy baths. Your skin will love you. So - volcano trekking and hot springs, didn’t we tell you this trip was unmissable?
