- Central to the battle plans of national war hero Skanderbeg
- Renowned ethnographic museum
- Explore a preserved Ottoman bazaar

The town of Kruja, just outside the capital, Tirana, was a centre of Albanian resistance against the Ottoman Turks in the 15th century, led by the national war hero Skanderbeg. The ruins of this medieval castle are now one of the most popular day-trips from Tirana, and they offer sensational views from the battlements across the valley and out to the Adriatic Sea - just one of several attractions that make this Tirana gift experience so enjoyable.
A walking tour of Kruja includes the castle of course, as well as an ethnographic museum dedicated to Skanderbeg and his lifetime, and a beautifully restored Ottoman bazaar where you can purchase authentic Albanian antiques and souvenirs such as traditional costumes, musical instruments and artefacts from the Communist period. Note the castle’s watch tower, which was a vital part of the town’s defence - part of a chain of towers that would be lit up to communication with other castles.
