This was an excellent tour (1.5 hours) of a remarkable project started by Gaudi in 1883. The guide was highly competent. Our group consisted of twelve (12) individuals and with groups of ten or more received headphones so the guide did not have to huddle us to shout commentary. The tour is an excellent way to become familiar with the most important features and history of Sagrada Familia; after the official tour, participants may remain to take an elevator to a high point within one tower, visit the crypt, gift store, etc. This was a five-start success!

Barcelona is dotted with works by the noted Catalan architect, including Parc Guell. But it is the Sagrada Familia, which was begun in 1883 and remains far from completion according to Gaudi’s own design, that garners the highest praise. The interior sees a dramatic fusion of Gothic and Art Nouveau design, with intricate geometric detailing, and Biblical symbolism throughout. Especially noteworthy is the ceiling of the nave, with its columns arching out in the manner of a forest.
The exterior of the Sagrada Familia is no less elaborate, with eighteen spires eventually planned. And don’t miss the Nativity Façade, which celebrates the birth of Jesus, and its columns each of which sits atop a turtle or a tortoise to represent land and sea. Astounding, reverential, bizarre, and a towering achievement in Roman Catholic architecture, this is the essential visit in Barcelona.
