Next you’ll drive to the walled city of Agra, constructed of red sandstone by 4000 builders over a period of 8 years. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the fort once housed some 500 buildings, most of which were destroyed to make way for palaces and barracks. Of particular note is the Elephant Gate, guarded by two life-sized stone elephants - the fort itself was impregnable to siege by elephant due to its clever design.

The Taj Mahal, built as a mausoleum for the third wife of Shah Jahan, the Mughal emperor on the throne in the mid-17th century, is a masterpiece in white marble. Millions visit every year to roam the attractive ornamental gardens, see the world-famous dome, and the intricate decoration on the exterior walls which quote selected passages from the Koran.
