The Lord of the Rings movies are some of the most successful ever made, adapted from JRR Tolkien's iconic books. Several major scenes were shot on location just outside Rotorua, on a film set stretching over 10 acres to represent the Shire, home of hobbits Bilbo and Frodo Baggins. This delightful tour takes you around the set with a professional guide at hand to learn the secrets of construction, pointing out familiar structures such as the Mill and various hobbit holes dug into the earth.
Built on a 1250 acre sheep farm, the Shire set has been preserved to become a major New Zealand tour attraction, with thousands of fans visiting every year. As the tour finishes, you’ll be invited into the Green Dragon®Inn, a local hobbit drinking establishment, for a specially-brewed frothing pint of Sackville Cider or Girdle Fine Ale, guaranteed to get you in the mood for a great adventure.
