- Explore the largest lake in South America
- Immersive encounters with local island residents
Lake Titicaca is not only the largest lake in all of South America, it is also the highest navigable body of water in the world. So as you can imagine, it’s an impressive sight. During this Peru gift experience, you’ll get an early start to travel from Puno to the lake, then board a boat taking you out to a couple of the islands in the centre. A professional guide accompanies you throughout, explaining the area’s unique history and culture. This is a fascinating day-trip from Puno.
Uros is a group of manmade floating islands built of reeds, which can be moved around the lake according to need. The population here dates back to pre-Inca times, and you’ll spend some time with the local community, learning about their ways of life, before continuing on to Taquile. This island has a very distinctive culture, old-fashioned in some respects but vibrant and innovative when it comes to managing tourism. You’ll have lunch here, and visit a weavers’ cooperative with the chance to pick up some beautiful handmade souvenirs, before returning to the lakeside and journeying back to Puno.
