A fascinating exploration of Bulgaria’s religious and cultural heritage begins with a morning departure from Sofia and a drive to the prestigious Rila Monastery. Founded in the 10th century and considered to be the largest and most famous Eastern Orthodox Monastery in the country, the complex is lined with with treasures from its arcaded balconies and frescoes by the likes of the well-known Zograf brothers. Yet these are rivaled by the absolutely stunning views of the Rila mountains. Lunch can be purchased at restaurants on-site, and you can taste local specialities including mekitsi, deep-fried bread made with yogurt - delicious!
Returning to the city, the next stop on this Sofia gift experience is Boyana Church, where you’ll see more historically significant frescoes in a Byzantine building, depicting religious figures. Your guide will allow time for exploring this second UNESCO World Heritage Site, before you return to the city centre in time for dinner.
