Kanchanaburi, while now a popular destination for backpackers looking for a laidback alternative to Bangkok, will always be known as the start of the ‘Death Railway’ into Burma. The Bridge on the River Kwai was constructed by POWs and slaves, many thousands of whom died before it was completed. On this Bangkok gift experience you’ll visit the JEATH War Museum to learn more about these hellish events, as well as what life in Asia was like during World War II. There are many other important historic sites here, including cemeteries, which you can explore. You’ll also learn the big irony - that the bridge was actually over the Mae Klong river, and to satisfy the hordes of tourists who visited the area after the book was released, this stretch of the river had to be renamed.

You’ll take a ride on the railway, over the bridge, which was built by the Empire of Japan to support its troops. You’ll stop for lunch, before visiting the Tham Krasae Cave to see a well-known statue of Buddha, and have some more time to wander the railway and its surroundings before heading back to the other side of the bridge again.
