Departing from Dalvik Harbour, this epic quest through the wild seas off Akureyri, Iceland’s northern capital, has a strong success rate of finding humpback and minke whales, giants of the marine world. In 2011, 99% of tours spotted whales, as well as the playful white-beaked dolphins often found in these waters. You’ll view the whales from some distance away as they break surface, perhaps spraying air from their blow-holes, before moving closer. To see these majestic creatures in their natural habitat is a life-affirming experience.
Puffins and other sea birds are also often seen around here, many following the boat as you try your hand at a spot of Icelandic sea angling. The tour concludes back at the harbour where you’ll witness an interesting demonstration on how to cook and prepare fish. Who knows, if you get a bite you may even have that night’s dinner taken care of!
